Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin, which is the fold of skin covering the delicate end of the penis. There are generally three reasons for undergoing this operation. These would be religious reasons, cultural reasons or because of a medical procedure however even in this circumstance circumcision is generally considered as a last resort after other treatment has failed.
At Somerset Urology we provide a safe and comfortable circumcision service for all ages.
Circumcising
Circumcision for religious reasons, would be required by the Jewish and Islamic faiths. This is usually carried out on babies, although a small percentage of teenagers and adults choose to be circumcised for religious reasons and some for medical reasons.
Dorsal Slit Surgery
Used as a less-invasive alternative to circumcision to relieve tight foreskin conditions such as phimosis and paraphimosis, a dorsal slit is a single incision along the length of the foreskin from the tip to the ridge, exposing the penis head without removing any tissue.
Phimosis
Phimosis is the medical term for a foreskin that is too tight and cannot be rolled back over the head of penis. This can be because the foreskin fails to loosen during childhood or adolescence, but is more often due to infection or damage.
